While his mother wanted him to become a musician, Gethin instead enjoyed playing rugby union.
At the age of 21, Jones was offered a chance to try for Sale RFC but was not good enough and dropped his idea of playing the sport professionally and moved back to Wales.
Prior to starting his career as a television presenter, he worked as a bank clerk, a telephone hotline officer, and a research assistant.
Jones is a grade 8 violinist and grade 6 pianist.
He was voted Bachelor of the Year by the readers of Company magazine in 2003.
